Crenicichla and Discus combo?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think that "starting" them in a 120 is a mistake, I have thought long and hard about a mix similar to this, but, mine is planned for a 600. Moving pikes changes the dynamics of the social ladder so to speak, "bonded" pairs don't usually make it through moves like that from my experiences. Another consideration of the limited space is that the fish act differently based on the space they are given, less space usually means more aggression.

Thats just my two cents, either way, I would like to know how it works for ya, I am trying to make mine work this summer, plywood tank, 10' x 4' x 2' DIY.

Thanks for the responses guys and for your opinions. I am going forward with it.

I got a good price on a small group of Solomon red discus (7 fish in total) which will be moved in the 120 within the week, so far they are fine living with some small G. Abalios and Dicrozoster in a 65 gallon QT. They will get about 2 months to settle in there before the pikes will be introduced. I have 3-4 young multis coming in. I'm hoping as they grow I can maybe end up with a pair.

If the discus don't work out I wont be heart broken. They are simply just there because I like my tanks having a good balance to them and I think they will compliment the pikes. I can always swap them out with some panda uaru or possibly some baby black bar dollars.

Wish me luck!
