I came home to find that the temp in my 60g planted had hit 100+f !! For the life of me I could not figure out why the heater had malfunctioned.
See a week or so ago I had this BAAAD green algea outbreak and it wasnt responding to any treatment I tried, so in a last ditch effort, I threw in one of these 8w, 300 gph UV clarifier/sterilizer units I use in other tanks. I figured hell, it cant hurt to toss it in for a week or so, hopefully it would help to stop the algea problem (or so I was told).
So in the tank it went, and it was working just fine, all the little Haitiensis, festaes, and svenis, even my little distichodus and Bcrawler seemed drawn to the new current it was providing. But in all my ignorance, I put the unit in the tank sideways, with the intake about 3/4'' from the heater(big one, 300w I think). And I guess that the heaterwas turned up just a tad to help with an ick outbreak from last month. Do the math, 300 gph intake too close to heater= sveni stew!
When I first noticed the temp I immed turned the heater off and added a couple frozen 20 oz water bottles and the temp started to go down, the haits and festae were looking tired, the distichodus was acting normal but the pikes were hidden (tank is heavily planted and has a mosswall that the teenage svenis use as cover/bedding) . 2 hrs later I check again and on the bottom is a 5.5'' sveni, belly up. Luckily the others pulled through, but how close did I come to cooking all the fish?
S as for the original 5 juv svenis i got to raise and pair up (hopefully) Im down to 2. Wish me luck. I seem to need it.
\ Heres a few pics of the tank and fish .

Wow! Close call man! Sucks about your sveni but I'm glad the rest pulled through.

Sorry bro.

sucks but at least you did'nt lose all your fish

Sorry to here bout your loss bro. It is a good thing you came home when you did or they would have all been in the soup.

Whoa! Toasty roasty! I've lost fish that way before, really really really sucks! I feel your pain man!! I hope you moved the UV sterilizer...haha. I'd check the heater though, sometimes they go bad and stick...:(.

That def sux. I stewed my tanks twice. Once when I was 13 and about 3 months ago. Terrible way 2 go....like a lobster

check the heater and might want to try the JBJ Submariner UV Sterilizer/Clarifier. Got one in my 75, stays clean and gets a good bit of sunlight with 12hr lights. Also use 1 in my 125.

only down side right now is if the light goes out. Havent gotten around to asking JBJ about replacements. MD will tell ya to ask JBJ.
