This Friday at noon a pair of c. gaucho will be arriving at my local airport, thanks to a small group order and my inability to just say no... they are coming from Below Water

This will be my first pike, I actually expected to have regani or nothopthalmus as a first pike (I tend to lean towards dwarf cichlids) but availability and curiosity has led me towards gaucho.

There seems to be little information and fewer pictures, that made it a tough decision. Has anyone bred this species? I have a 75g tank ready to go (evicted my tropheus colony) and ready for the new arrivals.

When they are full grown will they play nice with clown loaches? (the gaucho are advertised 3" now).

I will be posting pictures after they settle in :)

I've got them in a 24 x 32 inch tank(about 40 gallons)...there's also a couple spotted ancistrus in there as well...Some driftwood, and a little playsand on the bottom...I'm currently feeding them frozen bloodworms...I don't feed live food-I think it's a big hassle and un-necessary IMO...David
p.s. I also have an order arriving from Oliver on Friday ;)

The one's I got from Rapps, he list's them as:
"Crenicichla guacho 4 inch wild Argentina speckled adults of semi-dwarf pike with ornate dorsal race". I recall reading a thread here somewhere where a guy caught two in Uruguay that were 10 inches and 12 inches, so you would think that 4 inches is too small to be adult. But, I could swear that my female is gravid, and getting into spawning mode at 4 inches, so perhaps two different species?
In any case, not trying to derail your thread--Can't wait to see pictures when your's arrive...David

I wouldn't call them a dwarf species by any means, And they are mean as hell. We caught two in Uruguay on rod and real using 3" tetras as bait, I'd say the clown loaches are goners. We lost one before we went home and Warren took a 12" female home and put her in his 300 gallon central American tank, within a week she took over and has the 12" wild male Motoguense hiding from her that had ruled the tank before she arrived. good luck. They are basically the same as C. scotti with a protruding lower jaw. Ken

David for me this is what this thread is for :)

We did a local order last sumer from Rapps, I almost ordered them at that time but the lack of information held me back. I suspect Jeff and Oliver get them from the same source?

I have a 30.5 X 18.5 x 21 (50g) that I might start them out in, it's decor is better right now.

Actually I wouldn't take that for granted(the same source)...They might not even be the same fish...I've been trying to get clear pictures, and will post some when I do...David

Ken you don't make this species sound too friendly :)

It should be an interesting experience, hopefully a good one...

Friendly pike, I didn't know any exist. But I wouldn't consider any fish that gets a foot long a dwarf species. Now they could be mislabled, but my Brazilain supplier calls Xingu 1 fry "Dwarf orange pike" and they get just as big!
