Nice looking fish, and I like the tank. Oak leaves? Havn't seen or heard of that in a tank before. What advantage is there to using them? Is it a ph control?
Any full tank pics?

Oak leaves lower pH and lower hardness as well. Plus, some of the tannins they release are a nice touch to a tank, in my opinion. Basically, oak leaves take my pH and hardness to where I want it for no cost. :)

So since yesterday, I've been doing 50% water changes twice a day, kind of doing the "rainy season" deal with them. Just to see what happens. I really don't think their breeding is based on wet/dry seasons, but it's worth a go anyways. The Corydoras in the tank are going nuts, though. =P Fresh escargot for the pikes.

Don't you mean caviar?:)

What? Are they breeding? That would be cool!

P.S.
Escargot - French snails.
Caviar - Russian Sturgeon eggs

Both rather tasty!

Yeah, the Corydoras breed alooot.. there's a new batch of eggs every other water change from either the C. pygmaeus, or the C. paleatus.

Any more updates on their breeding?

Their breeding is definitely wet season based(insect larvae and apistogramma fry make up much of their diet, both wet season food sources). Regani is often considered an 'annual' fish in it's home waters. They seem to make a meger(sp?) existence outside of the wet season.

I have free swimming fry from my pair of Crenicichla regani (Rio negro) they have just over 120 and are 2 weeks free swimming.
I also have a pair just formed of C.regani (barcelos), they have started to occupy a nice pot with a small round entrance. With luck they should spawn in the next week or so.
The temperature is 28C , ph is 6, with a GH of 2..
They have a silver sand substrate, no plants, and tank occupants of 2 large S,lilith and 4 Acarichthys heckelii.
They are fed 4 times a day, and have 20% water changes every other day
