Crenicichla Saxatilis question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’d just add the hatchet fish and so it can stay up in their zone. Wouldn’t add any more cichlids.

I agree with what was shared. If you’re insistent on pikes, the dwarves as mentioned would work. The same can be said for Albopunctata and Menesezi.

The issue when you find Crenicichla listed as Saxatilis, it could be anything since Saxatilis is sort of a catch-all name with most importers/distributors. True Saxatilis is hard to find but a breeder here in the states is offering them. I got some from him myself.

Pikes will ignore the geos unless they are spawning. Pikes rule tanks but they are benevolent rulers. Only causing issue if someone starts a fight with them or if they’re protecting young. Males of true Saxatilis hit around 8” not including the tail with females usually about 25-30% smaller.

I’d stay away from most hatchets with pikes. They’ll just end up as food one day. If you really want hatchets, nix the pikes.

Lastly, your tank is likely maxed with the Sveni. Not only are they among the larger growing geos, they are very deep bodied and carry a lot of mass when full grown. If you ever upgrade, I do reveille bd adding pikes. I have pikes in all my tanks and absolutely love them.

Good luck!

Thank you for all this information. I got the Sveni because I was told and read they are one of the smaller Geos maxing out at 6-7". So far, it's been suggested I could do 6-8 in my tank, but I did go with 6 to keep more room. 8 was to reduce more squabbling amongst them. I've been suggested a wide array of tankmates; however, I find myself liking the pike very much. Was hoping at the very least, a Regani, Belly Crawler, Compressiceps, or Orinoco Dwarf (something small along these lines would work). I don't mind ditching the hatchets. I felt with their size at 3"-3.5", they would be safe with a smaller sized pike, but if that's not the case, I certainly do not have them set in stone. Also, I was looking where I could keep one and enjoy it. I would like to avoid a pair.

The Sveni will hit 8” without the tail for a male. A little smaller for females.

If you only want one like, the Saxatilis should be fine. There are three species available now.
- Proteus. Both Aqua Imports and Wetspot has them
- Anthurus: saw them in aquabid. May be available still
- Inirida 3. Aqua imports has them. And Wetspot has a line one
- Sveni: always available.

No dwarves are available now from what I’ve seen sourcing the sites. I do have Orinoco Dwarf but everyone is now sold out.

Thank you. I check those sites often. Wet Spot had Orinoco Dwarf yesterday, as well as Regani, and the Inirida. I check Aqua-Imports a lot and I've seen them on pre-order lists and a couple other small shops around that ship out. I'll decide if that's the way I want to go, and if so, I'll just keep the Geos and the one Pike. Thank you so much!

I have 5 semi adult red head tapajos in a 75 gallon with a 1 compressiceps pike and they do fine together. Benn together for about a year.
