Crenicichla saxtilis

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great fish. I have a female with a big cloud of fry around her. Not sure exactly what saxatalis they are. Will get some pics uplater to get someone a bit more familiar with pike to ID them for me.

Here is her batch of eggs -

Have seperated half the fry into a fry tank and left the other half with her, see who is the better mother!? :screwy: In all honesty it's just too hard to feed the fry in a 300gal.

Side pictures of your Saxatilis would help ID it...can't really id it from that front picture. Watch the babies though.....cannibalism is VERY common....so sort them by size...;)

That was obviously not pic to ID it by. Will get a side profile shot in due time.

I actually have 3 adult breeding pairs and a pair that has just laid for the first time. I have read alot of reports about cannibalism. I have not found this to be the case, if fed well and often they will generally leave each other alone. It is only at about the 4 week mark that i take out the largest 5%. Leaving the rest in together.

Not your fault, but that picture is of the pike which goes by the common name "belly crawler". The fish in the picture is a male. If you enlarge the pic, you can see that it is absolutely covered w/ the pike "scrunge". That stuff is brutal. It initally looks like ich, but is more malignant. It covers the fish and becomes a stringy, matted mess. I lost some lenticulata, and more recently, a cobra to that stuff.

I didn't even really look at the pic. I was looking more at the text. This pic looks just like the one that I had http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/5491/saxatilispage.html I was looking more for ring tail being a common name for a sax. I bought him from the LFS as a Spangled Pike. Great fish. I lost him to furunculosis. I bought some feeder goldfish, and even quarantined them for 3-4 weeks. Goldfish are some nasty little creatures.
