I would bet that dropping the ph way down won't help at all, if these are anything like the rest of the pikes from Uruguay and the neighbouring part of Argentina, the ph is more neutral and above. That is what makes the pikes from this area so special, they come from water parameters that more people can attain, the chance of spawning these fish is way better, just work on the condition of them and try different triggers, I would bet temperature is a key one for the Tendies :D

I agree with you 100%. I have been trying to breed a piranha from Argentina, and the water parameters and temperature variations are very non similar to Brazil Peru, and Venezuela species. I have all the water parameters the piranha spawned in from last December. This was given to me from the collector. I will try and obtain the same information from the Uruguay this December. I believe this river floods a tremendous amount during the rainy season, this is why I favor conductivity breeding, and rising water. There is also a dramatic increase in water temperature from the middle of the rainy season to spawning times. I am curious to if they spawn in the flood plain in some hollowed out wood with vegetation all around or in a more rocky and desolated area. I am very new to pike cichlids, but not breeding fish. There is another species of fish from Argentina that has been bred in captivity, and it requires 90 day of cool to what you may classify as cold water then a warming people. Please remember parts of Argentina do get frost occasionally. I find this fish equally if not more challenging than the piranha species from there, because there is very little information about them in the wild or captivity. I’m excited to see the results and hopefully trigger pre-spawning behavior in this species. I will be getting more in July, my goal is to set up 3 colonies of 6 fish so I can attempt slightly changes and document the reaction of the fish to the stimuli.

It sounds like you have a great plan! I am excited to see the results.

I have finally gotten a spawn from my "Saxatilis" pikes I brought home with me in March of 2009, they should be hatching today :D (I have hard water and pH around 8.0)

I find this fascinating... This is the stuff I love forums for.. The 1st hand information with individual perception off all the theoretical possibilities to why the cause and affect was achieved... Please if you could share pics and any information on diet, or what you think may have triggered the spawning in captivity would be greatly appreciatied... If you choose to keep it proprietary please pm me, and everything will remain confidential....

Hi, I d' like to show you the natural habitat of this species, the Soberbio river in Misiones, Argentina
