Does anyone feed their sunfish crickets? I gave mine some as a treat since they had nothing but pellets for awhile. Today when I cleaned it I noticed a lot of wings and some legs floating around the top of the water. I think the fish pooed them out lol

I've fed natives and tropicals crickets. I don't know much about them from a nutrition standpoint. But the fish like tearing them apart.

I used crickets once to get a sick oscar to start eating again

I've used grasshoppers and crickets in the past. If I found bugs in my apartment, I'd toss them in the tank too and the bullheads would inevitably snatch them up :>

Hoppers and crickets were a big part of my Oscar's diet back in the day as well.

I feed mine insects all the time during the spring and summer but for some reason they don't digest the wings and other parts. I started just pulling the abdomen off the insect and feeding that to them. Problem solved.

Same here. Summer time means a variety of live bugs for all my larger fish. I don't worry about undigested body parts, that's what filters and water changes are for.

It doesn't worry me it's just weird that the wings and stuff just come back out and float all over the top of the water. Easy to fix with a net, reminds me I need to get a new net or two

I have a small pond in front of my house with a large mouth bass, sunfish, rock bass, yellow perch, and a bullhead or 2. also about 20 feeder goldfish. Yes, it's a weird stocking but it works. Every once and a while I get a small container of crickets and throw them in there....they love picking them off the top of the water. I feed them to my oscar and he absolutely inhales them. sometimes he digests the entire thing and sometimes he spits out the wings or legs....just depends

I find that my fish strip most of the wings, wing shields, legs, and antennae with their gill rakers before swallowing the main bodies. The torn parts shoot out from their gills.

Yeah I used to feed Green sunfish grasshoppers, crickets, and Katydids, they love them, I try to get them outside in a pesticide free area.
