I recently received a free onion plant (genus Crinum) and was wondering how it should fare in my tank. my tank is 20" deep (38gals) with a 24" 20w T8 light. the light came with the tank and up until now i was only growing java fern/anubias/crypts.
so how should the onion do? it looks ok right now...

I've had onion in my 75G.. I had 3x 4' T8 Bulbs and no Co2 and no Fertz and it grew, so i believe its a relatively easy plant and fun looking. Good Luck!

I am going to make a post trying to find big onions. It will be up soon and this is the reason why I came to MFK today.

Mine grew this size with 2 dollar lightbulbs from Kent's and warm water (was in a discus tank), now in my 70 gallon. I did use some ferts once and awhile (API leaf zone once a month or so)

got it... so it should do fine. right now its getting choked out by my crypts, so i have to do some moving around... also thats a massive onion!

I had one with goldfish, they killed it. Don't put them with goldfish haha.
I hope mine gets bigger. Its not that old. I have owned it for less than a year and a half. And I kid you not, it was around 1 foot long when I got it. 1.25 feet max! And it grew this long in about 1.5 years or so, probably just over a year since I have been at this apartment for around that time now.
So you will have a large plant quickly.

:D Cool, mine's maybe 10" if i stretch the longest leaf, so this will be interesting.

yea i had to keep cutting leafs down to the bulb they where all over the top of the tank, its fun having a fast growing plant.

Tom - Grats on the giant onion!

I got 2 in a 29 gallon. Both are over a foot. Has your onion propagated at all? Supposed to be baby bulbs growing off the mother bulb you can separate.

my school had it for a while, i just moved it to my tank at home 2 days ago. but its only 10" tall... hopefully it will propagate eventually.
