Critique my set-up! What would you do?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's really cool! I guess i can drill a couple holes and hook up a canister. That would definitely help with polishing.

After the first couple of holes we drilled in the 300 gallon tank, I was no longer nervous about the process. I held a container to catch debris before it fell in the water while my husband ran the hole saw. If you go the bulkhead route, you need a bigger hole than the size of the bulkhead. No way does a 1 1/2" bulkhead fit into a 1 1/2" hole. ....one of those lesson learned thing for me...

I have the tank down right now because i had a seam whiting. I'm going to get it repaired so it shouldn't be tough cutting those holes now while it's dry.

If you already have canisters laying around you're not using, then throw em on there. I wouldn't buy new canisters if you already have a sump, though. Adding a couple filter socks is way cheaper. The problem with adding more foam/pads is that stuff is getting around them into the sump--and there's more to clean/change. I think it's a lot easier to change out a couple filter socks than replace/clean a bunch of foam/pads in a sump. But, if you don't have space, that alters your decisions, too. No space to easily swap socks, they're not much fun to use, either. Pads might be better in that case.

I guess you could live with it in the sump, but I'd think it's not good to have it on your bio-media.
