Croc Hunter's 'Bum-Breathing' Turtle Faces Extinction

I had the pleasure of seeing the first batch of Irwins turtle bred in captivity this weekend. They are a very beautiful turtle.

They are for sale also, so any one that is interested, they are available for $650.00 through AFTRCA, or Australian Freshwater Turtle.

The "bum breathing" is something a number of turtles have in common. What sets the Irwin's turtles apart is that they get up to 75% of theire oxygen requirments through theire bum.
 
I believe snappers do it primarily when they are hibernating, so their oxygen consumption would be pretty low.

That's awesome. Do you know if they are being restricted to being kept only in AUS?
