Cross breeding clowns

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The main thing that makes them unlike cichlids is the nest cleaning. I assume since thier mouths are so big they can't oraly clean thier nest. For about 5 hours the female would pass over the nest and, using her ovipositor, secrete what I assume is a urine mix to burn the algea from the log. It was a new one for me and everyone I have discribed it to.

This trully is the most AMAZING thing evar! So under proper conditions they WILL breed in aquarium! One question though: From the videos I assume that CK is the male while Royal is the female or is it vise versa?

BTW that comment about using urine to burn off algae is just unbelivable :WHOA:

Well to answer the question, the male is the Royal. The bad news is dad ate the eggs. There was no fungus or out side interaction. Next time I'm taken them away. They caught me so by surprise I wasn't ready. Sorry guys but we learn and they live right? I'm gonna give her awhile before reintroduction. On a side note I, at some point next week will be the proud owner of my own fish store. I have big plans, you know for BIG FISH!!!!!! Why kkep um if we're not gonna spend our lives trying to make thiers better. Thanks for all the support and interest. I'll keep ya posted.

Oh, the other questions. The breeding took place in a 75. The Royal is around 20" and the clown about 18".

that's awesome! i've never heard of clowns breeding in captivity before you must have hit on the right formula of environmental conditions etc well done i have know doubt you will get to raise some in the near future! it just goes to show how closely related the two species are look forward to seeing more footage in the future keep up the good work:)

I'm just curios... Considering that they are different, although closely related species, do you notice ANY sexual difference at all? Any tell tale signs of distinguishing a male from a female?

The female had a noticable ovipositor months before the breeding.

this is truely amazing! You realize you're the first person to ever video two clown knives breeding, let alone two from different species? That is something to be proud of! Everything we've read can be changed now. I would've done what you did in leaving the dad to raise the fry. he's inexperienced though. I'm sure if you used a bubbler with the eggs they'd hatch. Then feeding the little buggers. you'll get there. If they bred once, they'll likely breed again. Wonder how long til they're ready again? 3 months?
