Amazing - you are very lucky to have observed that guy! As you probably know, lying on the ground amongst leaf litter and whatnot they are extrememly difficult to spot. I have hiked many times in the Smoky Mountains in TN & NC and never veiwed one - copperheads and garters only. Lucky you!

should be next year if i ever get back to the list of parts to do... i wanna do it all but time and travel add up against me... a friend of a friend told me about this area for rattle snakes...
 
I was walking around in the woods by my house and stumbled upon a breeding ball of cotton mouths. At least it looked like a they were breeding.
