Hey folks.

Here is our 2yo F1 Rio Orinoco Oscar, we purchased from Jeff Rapps back in 2012. We are really really happy with him.
He lives in a 72g Bowfront running 2xEheim 2217 filters. Tankmates are a couple of small Bichir, Plecos, and one Spiny Eel.

Good feeder, good tankmate, and just an all around cool fish. Just wish I had purchased another!

One question though. How much current to Oscars appreciate in their tank? I have a small powerhead in the tank, but wonder if he would appreciate more?

That is a stunning Oscar, congrats. As far as flow my Oscars never really cared either way, though they did enjoy the less turbid areas

Good looking Oscar! Oscars don't need allot of current they are pretty slow easy going fish.

No disrespect or anything but looks kinda small for 2 years old? Is that cus its wild o?

Thinking the same thing. Perhaps its just a runt. That is a good looking fish though.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

As for the size, I really couldn't say. His staple food is Hikari gold cichlid pellets. He also gets frozen bloodworm cubes. He has never struck me as "underfed" and seems to be pretty healthy, 8.5-9" in length.
Would you cichlid guys recommend changing his diet?

I wouldn't say underfed just smaller than expected for a two year old Oscar. I expect a two year old Oscar to be at a foot but not all grow the same

Like I said, it could be just a runt. Seems like you're doing a fine job, since you've had him for 2 years and he looks really good. Doesn't look underfed to me at all, just small for its age. I personally wouldn't change what you're doing since he's healthy looking and fits into that 72 tank nicely. Also, I would add some earthworms and crickets as a weekly/biweekly treat.

we would expect a captive bred oscar to be a foot, i would imagine wild oscars would attain various max sizes in different areas depending on how its evolved there... just a guess tbh but possible none the less... the lfs oscar has been bred for decades no doubt with the 'pick of the litter' fish (largest and most colourful) from the batch getting bought up or kept for breeding.
