i´m a newbie in SW tanks so please understand if i´m stupid or something, well the thing is this, i bought around 60 lbs of crushed coral substrate from carib sea, later on when reading on different forums i´ve seen that not many people recomend this substrate because of the continuous increase in nitrates, and that acumulates alot of $H...T, so, can i mix argalive sand with creushed coral to "fill" the spaces and not allow to acumulate waste?

Thanks in advance

You'd be better of to pick one or the other, as the sand, being a finer grade will settle to the bottom.

is it at all possible to make a 100% switch?

heck leaving some of it in amd mixingf them would give any burrowing fish something extra to work with

well that would only be benifitial if you have a few gobies or a jawfish or something...

but i suppose leaving some would be a PROBLEM persay.. 30-70 should work

ok, then can i stick with crushed coral?? and for the nitrates just make water changes? or what would you recomend?

You can choose whatever substrate you want, it's your tank. Thing I hate about crushed coral is that not only does it mess with your parameters, but it also will limit the species of bottom dwellers you can have, will not be an ideal substrate for any burrowing animals, and because it's surface space is so great and it is so porous, you will notice significantly more algae growth on it. I simply prefer sand, but it is up to you in the end.

I have used crushed coral on one tank. I found nothing wrong with it. My nitrates were easy and continue to be easy to control. The only thing I don't like about it is its really dusty when you first add it to your tank.

pics? :D
