Has anyone used crushed coral in a African tank. I am thinking of switching to the crushed coral and heard that it is better for the fish. When cleaning the tank using a syphon does the coral get suck up into the syphon? If you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know. Thanks

Do you mean the PH level? The coral is good for raising the PH for Africans.....the ammonia is a seperate issue

I think its suppose to buffer up the Ph. Will also help the fish color up better. I have no idea about syphoning as i dont use it.

Interesting, please post pictures once you have the crushed coral in the tank. I think it might work....

I would recommend you look at mixing it with some sand. You can also look at adding in some not so fine coral pieces to give it a more chunky look. No real problem when cleaning. You just control the level to which you allow the coral to be sucked up into the syphon.
Works extermely well and helps with the water conditions.
My 5 tanks have this mixture in them.
I have found that after feeding my fish all go down and filter through the sand/coral mix for quite some time. Rembering that some of the fish feed by sifting through the sand in the lake.:naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2

Sounds good. I think that I am going to try the sand with the coral. What type of sand do you recommend.

I think the ammonia level goes up more
That statement was incorrect. I use different substrates in many of my tanks, but crushed coral/Argonite is one of my favorites. It keeps the pH up and increases hardness. I'm not a chemistry wiz, but this keeps the buffering capacity up which keeps big swings in water quality from happening. I've done the sand mix and mixed with gravel. I've had a hard time finding it real fine for my true sand-sifters, like Fossochromis rostratus, so I put it in the sump of their tank and use sand in the main tank.
When cleaning the tank using a syphon does the coral get suck up into the syphon?
I use a Python on my tanks with the crushed coral. If you have good suction then you need to be careful when using sand or the finer stuff. I skim the surface for large debris and occasionally will stir up the substrate and just suck up the murky water. I have found that Dolomite does not keep the pH as high and don't use it anymore.

I like all the info. I use marbles, flat rock & flat marbles. They seem happy. There are breeding, so it can't be that bad;) It's very easy to clean.
