Crushed Coral with Centrals?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have thought about doing this too...my water is well water and sucks. Out the tap is 5.5 and I have to air it over night to get it to 7.6. But the hardness is 0 so a little bit of jumbo sa/ca poo and it crashes back to 5 something. I thought about taking the bio bag out of my aqua clear filters and using crushed coral. Do y'all think that would work out as a buffer and enough bio area. Also do you think it would be a pita to clear vs the bio rings.

I run 3 AC110s on my 125, in one of the filters i am running the foam for mechanical and filled the remaining space with crushed coral (in a mesh bag). I used about 1/2 cup per 20 gallons. It takes a couple days to work, so add a bit at a time and test your water daily until you get the ph you desire.
My ph out of the tap is 6.2 and ever since using the crushed coral for about a year now, my ph in the tank stays a steady 7.4.
Good luck

I have a couple of pieces of crushed coral in my 180 gal. But I can not say what the pros and cons to having it in there are.

I'm curious to know how long the crushed corals in the filtration hold a higher PH, it's going to degrade but I have no frame of reference as I've never tried it.
