Crushed corals for substrate? (BGK)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It was a success! What I did (as advised by a friend who also has crushed corals as substrate) is to boil the CC first, after boiling it try rinsing with tap water and then boil it again. After that rinse again and you can put the corals in the tank, then do a 30% water change after you put all the CC in. :headbang2

what does boiling the corrals do with regards to the PH? you should have just used leaves IMO corrals as substrate could injure your BGK with it's sharp edges..

My friend said that if CC are boiled, it could help remove too much salt that would help increase the ph level of water.
I believe that bgk can detect food and surroundings by means of it its weak electric current. If he/she has injuries I would have noticed it already.:nilly:

Sorry, but your friend is misleading you. It's not the salt (sodium chloride) that raises the pH. It's the calcium continuously leeching from the coral that will raise your pH. There is some salt in the way of calcium chloride. But, you can't boil it all out without having nothing but dust remaining

The normal pH range, in the wild, for BGKs is pH 6.5 (+/-0.2). And, the GH is naturally 7. Crushed coral can raise your pH from 7.4 to well over 8.0. And, the GH will be in the range of 11. It doesn't matter what parameters anyone is keeping theirs at. This is the range this species evolved in and, therefore, would be most comfortable to thrive in.

ok..anyway i said COULD INJURE and not injured:nilly:..you may not notice anything now, but it COULD happen later on..ACCIDENTS do happen..good luck
