So I've been thinking. A lot of us use biomax which is ceramic rings. Anyone ever thought of crushing up ceramic tile? Now I'm no pro in filtration, but I'm always looking for alternative ways to save money. Just 2-3 tiles crushed would easily fill up the media trays in my fx5. I KNOW ceramic tile isn't harmful to the fish, but my question is, will this actually work in place if that hella expensive fluval biomax ceramic rings?

Well I crushed a tile up and it's not as pores as the actual ceramic rings, but then again, I remember kendragon and or hulon uses glass media which isn't pores at all I'd assume the crushed tile is between glass and ceramic rings.

Any other thoughts?

But like i said. I know kendagon uses crushed glass. Hopefully he can chime in.

I would think it would work as long as you have plenty of surface area and make sure no slivers make it to the motor. I smashed up a bunch of limestone and packed one of my canisters full of it for my Mbuna tank. Tiles might not be quite as porous but I bet it'll be close.

Why smash tiles when you can smash beer bottles? j/k
Glass media I use is graded and tumbled. Works like sand in trapping debri. Stacks like sand in creating even pockets for bacteria. Advantage of glass over sand is ease of backwashing. Glass is not used for it's porous property.

Ooo ok. I didn't know u had that type of glass lol. I literally thought it was just random crushed up glass.

So crushed ceramic tile probably won't replicate ceramic rings at all? Cuz a 500g box of fluval rings cost like $12. And it wouldn't be too bad if one box would fill up a tray in my fx5. But it takes almost 4 boxes each tray.

Not sure if it's the same. You can give it a try. Mine is made for aquaculture. Pretty coarse, washed and graded with no sharp chips.
