crying tortoise...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We used to get Torts with eye infections a lot back at the exotic pet store I used to work at, basically the same kind of thing you described. Its not a big deal. The Vet we used usually gave us a Rx for some kind of eyedrops, I forgot the name though...its not expensive...I can find out the name of it if you are interested.

please do find out...thanks...

Carrots, cantaloupe, dark leafy greens, sweet potatoes. Also try upping the temps and humidity. I wouldn't worry too much though, this is common in hatchling tortoises.

cool...i put kale and romain and dandelion in with a hibiscus this morning ...ill add grated carrots tomm...

any pics of your redfoot? apply drops to the eyes is quite difficult as it tend to hide inside his shell , how you guys applied it?

they really dont hide to much jsut be patient and they come back out and dont mind you to much just once they come out dont make sudden moves our theyll get scared and pull in...thats how i gove sulfa drops to the RES at work once when three came in with eyes swelling... tortoise are close im learning now that i own two redfoots they pull in and i hold them a bit and they come out and dont mind me inspecting the eye and face region anymore....

ps they dont seem to eat any leafy stuff i put in the indoor enclosure and they do eat the yrd...i have seen on poo yesterday and theother might have pooed in the 10gal where tehy sleep when i use ac...but i dont know who made that one... and the eyes are looking better...and they didnt even notice the grated carrots where there...

Could be the humidity, drier red foots sometimes exhibit crying. The substrate needs to be about 70-80% humidity.

i mist down the potting soil cause i notice how dry it looks every morning when i wake up and when i come home from school/work...so humidity shouldnt be a problem. and they arent really "crying" anymore....

Hey, good to hear your little guys are doing better. I would invest in a thermometer / hygrometer. Preferably a digital one so you can monitor temps and humidity.

now that you mention that i have been looking into those and the ones i find in the store down here seem unreliable ( i think zoo med makes em) but i open on pack and it said 72Degree and 52% hum and i open another one in the same rome and it say 74deg and 51% hum...and they were in the same spot open on the shelf of the store for 10minutes before i gave up the thought of buying one of those uncalibrated products... so if you can recommend a good company cause i would probably get it off the internet and since i cant test two products from the same manufactuer to see how well clibrated they are i would be going purely off of the expierence of you and other keepers and your judgment of products.
