Cryptheros Pair or Harem?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Astyanax tetras are very common in Cenral America, they get quite large (4"+), are very quick, and can be aggressive, and will eat any fry in the tank, and can shred cichlid fins.
A video below from Cenote Aktun Ha with Astyanax, that were constantly biting my neck and ear lobes.
Aktun Ha
If it were me, I'd go the route Gouramai Swami suggested with the nanos, and maybe swordtails.
Yucatan mollies can also get quite large, in Cenote Cristalino, I saw 7" males.
If HRPs a harem might be best in that size tank, I kept a small pair with some green swords, in a 45 gal, but when they spawned no other fish remained alive.

Those tetras seem like the misquitos of the water so that rules them out. If the yucatan mollys get that big then I will go with some Green Swordtails as dithers.
I'm down to 4 options for my cichlids.
1. Trio or pair of Panamensis
2. Group of HRP (1m 3fm)
3. Pair of Thorichthys Aureus
4. Group of Thorichthys Socolofi if I can find them the only person which I can think of which has them is Rusty Wessel

Edit: Choice 5. A harem or 2 pairs prob a harem of rainbow cichlids

I agree about the astyanax tetras. Most need a 6’ tank as they can get big. They are also very nippy and can be very aggressive w/ each other.
I personally would go w/ 4 if you can. Socolofi are very rare in the hobby and they are beautiful. Think you might be right about Rusty having them.

Now all I have to figure out is how to get some of those Socolofi from him.

Not sure. I believe Jeff Rapps has sold them before, and probably got them from Rusty. Maybe shoot Jeff an email.
My 2nd choice would be aureus.
Another great thorichthys for that tank would be thorichthys panchovillai (formally Mixteco). They have officially been described as their own species. Gorgeous fish. Here’s some pics of mine. You can probably find them on aquabid.

Unfortunately Jeff isnt carrying any fish from the Thorichthys genus :(. All I can find on aquabid are T.Meekei T. Aureus and one female T. malcuipinis. Your right about those panchovillai they are beautiful how big do they get?

I would still send him an email. If he knows what people are looking for, then he may get some. You never know, it’s worth a try.
Panchovillai get around 5” I believe. Like most thorichthys, pretty slow growing. I would like to breed them myself. I just need females. I have 2 males.
I would like helleri one day. One reason I wanted panchovillai is because they are as close as I could get. At one time panchovillai was thought to be helleri.

Thanks ill shoot him an email asking about them.

Allright im down to 2 options
1. A pair of Panamensis
2. A group of small Thorichthys (wont know if this is possible till Jeff gets back to me)

Or if anyone has any suggestions for a fish which hasnt been bred of has barley ever been bred to go into a 40 gal I would consider them because I have to much time on my hands out of school.
