Cryptoheros cutteri "Rio Mongo" SPAWN

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Jeez, zombie thread! :)

Let's see... They started spawning about every two weeks and in general being a bit of a nuisance (granted, a very attractive and entertaining nuisance to have). I went on vacation and had a friend watching my tanks and got a call that the female had a chunk of flesh bitten off her side and she died the next day. Have no idea who did it and it's the only adult CA cichlid I've lost to aggression.
The male is living happily in my 225 community and is starting to show a bit of a nuchal hump. I have two of their offspring growing out in a 20 gallon.
Enjoy them!

Sad to hear about the female, do you have pics of the male since he's been transferred?

I know this is an old thread but how are these guys doing these days? I just picked up a group of juvies from Dogofwar and have gotten the "itch" to breed. Interesting to see the difference between the Rio Mongo and the Rio Jutiapa strains
Matt (Dogofwar) is a great guy and your gonna love these little guys. My cutteri group might be about the most entertaining fish to watch in my entire house! Good luck with them!

Yeah, it was a bummer. I always seem to have bad luck when I go out of town (which is several times a year because all of my family lives out of state). I will try to get a good picture for you, he isn't nearly as bold without his female and it's a wide tank so a bit difficult for me to get one with my camera skills (or lackthereof). I'm hoping the two offspring I have will turn out to be male and female, but since they're F2 siblings I would likely feed off their fry.

Thanks! I got them about two weeks ago and they're already putting on some size so I'm excited to see how they turn out, not to mention I'm also attempting to breed my F2 HRP Rio Danli, I think I might have a thing for the Cryptoheros / Convict genus lol

I have a pair of these as well (rio mongo). They're on their second spawn. The first attempt didn't go so well. Question for you guys with successful spawns. Does your female seem to do all the work? In my case once they hatch, my male is off to play with my other female.

I wouldn't know just yet... I do have what appears to be a pair in my group, as the ol' shimmy dance has begun. But no eggs yet, that I can see, anyway. And no homicidal behavior! LOL...

I have mine in with some leucistic HRPs (and I have been wanting some sajica in the worst way, but have not been able to find any). So I guess I am getting a fever for these types of fish also! LOL...
