So ... is the tank now unfiltered, now that you unplugged it? Any alternative source of filtration/aeration?

He didnt unplug his filter, he unplugged his powerhead. A powerhead sprays out water and creates aeriation and water circulation. Some powerheads are combo (very simple) filters that have a prefilter or sponge on the intake but are not a main source of filtration. Additionally some are hooked up to an undergravel filter. In this case it was just being used for a powerhead. It didn't have anything filtering the intake, just an open hole.

Thank you Balton777. Yes the tank is filtered with 2 AC110's. I added the AC 50 powerhead thinking it WAS smaller than what I needed. I have a "power Sweep 228" on order thru Drs foster n smith, for the other end of the tank. Anyone have one of those? a powerhead that sweeps side to side, continuously?

My fish seem to like the added current and it moves debris around so the filters can suck it up

I actually watched my YOYO loach swim by it, get sucked over against it, then he swam away from it on his own. So...I never thought there was a chance of a larger fish getting stuck to it or inside of it...ever

You have 2 AC110's in your 90 gallon? That's a lot of circulation, each one blows out 935 gallons/hr. I use one in my 156 and I find it to be sufficient circulation.

You made no mention of filters in your original post, which is why I asked about filtration.
There's just the two fish now? That's A LOT of filtration/circulation. Why so much? That's like putting an Aquaclear 500 on a 10 gallon tank. You mention your fish enjoying it - Loaches would, due to their being from stream habitats, but many Cichlids prefer slo-mo water for the most part.

one ac 110 is the same as an ac500 maybe.. 500 gph each but probably not. more like 400-450 would be my guess. That is more than enough filtration and circulation in my opinion but the way they flow it's not going to create a huge current in the tank. But you don't really need a powerhead either with that setup. I would do one at most to leave some area in the tank relatively quite flowise though.

The powerhead is little over half way down to the bottom of the tank. The cichlids can avoid it whenever they choose and seem to sit right in it sometimes. If it was bothering them I wouldn't have added it. I had a smaller but similar set-up on my 30. Its aimed straight across from back to front of the tank so most of the current is spreading out along the front wall of the tank...easy to avoid if they want to. The Cories love the current too and swim there often as they did in the other tank. So as far as happy fish I'm good

My stocking list in the 90 includes:
1 3-4" GT
1 3" Firemouth Meeki
1 4" pleco
6 "targets" little Tetras n 2 Tiger Barbs (Old fish I put in first to make sure it was cycled ok)
1 4-5" YOYO Loach (will add 1-2 more-GREAT Cleaners!!)
2 cories

a 6" JD Female(?) will be going in soon but I'm not sure the others are ready for her yet. Especially if I get another Salvini. Once the small "target" fish are gone I probably won't replace them, to lighten the bio-load a little.

AC 110's are the new version of the 500. My thinking was that this tank is so high (24"), that most circulation is occurring in the top half of the water. the powerhead helps the bottom half circulate better. Seems to be working well for me.

I'll download some pics tonight so hopefully I can figure out how to put them in here for ya;)
