theyll outgrow it.
but they grow very slow.
you could probably get away with it for more than a year.
they get to 12 inches in captivity usually.

As stated above they will eventually out grow a 40. i currently have 3. And they are in a 75 with a few other fish that have no buiness in a 75. And they do great. I have kept this fish off and on for about 5-7 years. And the set I have now have been with me for 3years. I got them when they were around 3''. And they quickly grew to around 5-7'' in the first year and they are not much bigger than that now. But for this fish it is not so much the size that limits there tank size it is that they are a very fast open water swimmer. And they need swimming room. The best set up for them would be a tank that is as long as you can make it and not so much width or depth. Also i have never been able to get htem to eat anything but live feeder fish. i beleive that i starved my second hujeta to death trying to break it. And since then I have not tryed with any fish.

:eek:i got all my hujetas to take pellets.
the powerhead trick works well.

Man i bet i still have fishing line around a power head here somewhere. I even bought a teacher fish a dam oscar to show them what to do and the little guy still did nothing. i gave the oscar back to the lfs after a month. And a month and a half later i woke up to a dead hujeta. That fish was stubburn it went over 2 months with nothing to eat. And i beleive it died from starvation. From then on its been live for all my preds. I have a 75g feeder tank and a 75g show tank for my mains.

my Hujeta was a little stubborn- when i got him he was in a tank swarming with mountain cloud minnows so as soon as i got it home it didn't want to know. Gradually it started accepting Blood worm and then in the last couple of days he has started taking dead feeders. it's only 4" and the feeders are 2"+ so it's must be a fair old struggle for the little chap to get one down! He's not shy thought and is pretty much feeding from my hand already.

For tank mates i have mine with some red tailed payara. But pretty much any fish that will not eat it or is to big for the hujeta to eat is good. They are primarily top level swimmers, so some decent sized characin mid lievel swimmers would be good. i had allways wanted to do a tank with a shoal hujeta and a shoal of red tail barracuda (falcatus)
