Ctenopoma in 30 gallon tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great. My daughter saw this and the next thing out of her mouth was, "awww, its cute! Don't worry fishy, we're going to buy you soon."

she can explain to the wife why there's another tank in the house, it'll buy me enough time to run and hide...

Picked up another two, the two on the left are new, the two on the right are the ones that I picked up three weeks ago. They have grown a good amount.

Interesting color contrast.Did you get them from the same place?

Yea. Im assuming it has to do with the stress of being newly introduced. We'll see tomorrow.

Being they're an ambush predator, I wonder how much their environment plays into their contrast, i.e. whether a dark tank produces darker, low contrast patterns.

O

Just chiming in again. Their colors seem to match now. One of them has considerably outgrown the other 3. The larger one is roughly 3" now, the others are closer to 2". I'll get a real measurement when I upgrade their tank within the next week. I'm going to start my own thread as well.

I adore these fish. I had a pair of them that grew up together in a 55 and ended up in a 100.

Unfortunately once they hit ~3 inches they became extremely territorial. Before I did something about it, the smaller (barely smaller, that is) of the two pretty much spent all his time hiding from the other one. The only time the alpha cteno left him alone was when food was coming down. Prior to adulthood, they used to hang out with each other constantly in plants and caves. Once accustomed to human presence, they were very bold and interactive. Regardless of the aggression later on, they're awesome fish. So much personality and a pleasure to observe :)

Great fish I own 1 5" he's nice but definatley gets territorial for food, he ripped my BFKs jaw out because there was a peice of shrimp in there lol awesome fish just provide a cave they like to hide until feeding time, would be good in a 30 gallon for a good amount of time prob a year and a half, had mine in a 45 for almost a year but got him out only because I got a bigger tank
