ctoychik's update ... well sort off ^^

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
bro u remember the last time i got a pima. and i immediately tried to starve him to make him take pellets. then he actually died!

So for the new pimas how exactly did u look after the babies? did u initially feed them live food to let them build size + strength then convert to dead food slowly? and at wat size did u convert them? wat is ure strategy?

Sorry i just really want to get this right. ive already been responsible for 2 pima deaths. very heartbreaking :s

Hmmm, i never actually got only one paima at a time - several always (they seem to school together alot - never leave each other far. this is true with my neighbors pimas too - they hang out close to each other)

... and i never got i never got them really small. They were like at least 14cm though i have seen plenty small ones in LFS in Bangkok.

Whenever i got mine, they were already trained to eat variety of food - including pellets from LFS. I never actually had problems with small fish eating pellets (well except asian aros) - it is the big guys grow out of them and stop eating them (cats included).

With paimas (and other fishes) small pieces of shrimp (no shell) are accepted quiete readily. Try giving pellets (floating hikari sticks) - if don't accept go for pieces of de-shelled prawns. I would not give live unless last resort. Believe it or not, a LFS owner's pima choked to death on SH (i stopped after i heard about it - you remember i used to feed my fishes SH all the time)

Watch out for jumpiness - i recon they can actually kill themselves if you spook one enough - they really do jump (my last batch is especially jumpy).

Good luck, bro. I don't recon they are that hard to keep as long you got space (which you do). Moving them from your 7' to pond is going to be even more difficult than your silvers. These guys are much stronger ^^

Just a quick update on the 8' comm - war is declared in this aquarium.

Silvers fight constantly. I start to notice torn pectorial fins on one (though tail and anal fins are ok). they constantly circle one another though never seem to bother their tank mates. Two have tears around their mouths (i say from jumping and hitting the cover). one silver started to show signs of dreaded DE lately (so i support Bderick's theory on head trauma cos they definitely have been jumping lately)

HBRTG and X-back are at each other though HBRTG seems to be more on the receiving end (couple of lost scales)

Paimas are just crazy lately - very jumpy (which is very annoying cos the aquairum is all sticky and yukky on the outside) - gotta move them soon.

All and all, everyone is eating like there is no tomorrow.

PS: NTT is fine and does not care about anyone else
PS1: will be moving the healed up (tail and anal fin grew back after a bash-up couple of months ago in 8' set-up) hunch-back green back into the asian community in the couple of days (let's see if BB accepts him - if not i am gonna feed the green to RTCs hehhehe jk) - the hospital tank shall become my dream NEON TETRA comm tank (spotted these in Udon last weekend - finally!)

Awesome, all your tank's are so nice. You have a great selection of fish.

Thanks. Nice collection yes. Nice tanks ... not so sure ^^ but thanks again.

Wait till i set-up my NEON TETRA tank :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

How big are your arapaimas? Assuming they are around 18", they have quite some color on the already. Mine used to be quite red, but lately the color seems to be fading :(.

Maybe it has something to do with their food? Or not...?

the paimas are about 2'+ (in any case still less than 3'). I am quite pleased with this batch - very bright coloring. I feed lots of prawns with shell. I even feed them left over shells from red and BB.

yet again - before water change ^^ pretty site - eat like beasts and that. fight between themselves alot

Moving paimas soon so this tank becomes silver tank with some flecks of gold here there
