I saw a picture of one of these guys on a magazine cover a couple years ago but I cant seem to google up any info on them. They looked like a herichthys carpintis but were larger (up to 14") and more agressive. Unfortunately I dont have the magazine anymore and didnt write the scientific name down.

Does anyone have any info on these. I have an empty tank that I am loking at putting a carpintis in but if I could get my hands on one a cuban I would do it in a heartbeat.

Search Nandopsis tetracanthus. There is info on them out there. They get to 12", are pretty, and not super duper agressive. Jeff rapps seems to always stock them.

Thanks but that isnt the right one.

When I say it looks like a carpintis I mean exactly like one. super deep body and high forehead and marked the same as well. The one in the photo was attacking the glass of the tank like a dovii.

There is another Cuban cichlid, Nandopsis ramsdeni, I have been trying to get a few for over 10 years, as rare as beani here in the US, and I expect out of a normal buyers price range if available, considering the $500 tag on the recent beani sold. Last article I saw about them was in the 1996 TFH mag called meet the Joturo Again by Carlos Tallet.

Thanks for the good info once again... http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/ramsdeni2.jpg I am confused though. Why would they call them both Cubans?

I believe that was MoJo's photo on the cover of TFH's July 2006 issue. It's of his large H. carpintis 'escondido' but was mislabeled in the credits and called N. tetracanthus.
