found a breeding pair of cuban cichlids, the only tank I could breed the in is a 50 gal (36x18x18)or a 90 gal that has a sump, so just looking for some info on breeding and other info you may have! thanks.
That 50 gal is a very small tank, but if they are well bonded it might work.
I had my pair in a 125 with a 100gal sump, without problems and during pre spawning removed all other fish. Some fry ended up in the sump, and this turned out be a good thing.
Because fry can be canabalistic if in close quarters
Lots of small feedings per day will keep the largest fry from eating the smaller ones.
Also having lots of algae to graze really helps.
During spawning they are as aggressive as any of the most aggressive cichlids, and will not hesitate to destroy fish twice their size.
I have watched 3 inch tetracanthus fry swallow 2" siblings.
The fry from my pair also started to eat their parents. Had to remove them because they'd just keep picking on a raw spot on the parents...
I bred a small pair in a 2'x2'x1' 30g tank...but the pair was only about 3.5-4"... and I kept a 3rd wheel behind a divider in the tank to ensure the pair had someone to "defend" against. Worked great...
