Polypterus : May I confirm with you that your results so far shows that a gar in warm waters will grow at a constant faster rate as compared to a cooler temperature?

Where I'm at, there is no cooler seasons, in fact much or summer all year round.

Should I start keeping the monsters in a cooler area, such as in air conditioned room instead of keeping the water more or less a constant 27-28 deg C to control the growth?

I've long suspected a "theory" that fishes in cap would seldom reach the growth as in the wild, as with most animals in cap.

May I also ask if anyone have found any changes in speed of growth in comparison to the size of tank, as in speed of growth in a pond direct vs speed of growth in a smaller tank?

Thanks in advance for any replies and feedback.

Growth in fish is determined by a number of factors the most important being:
Temp, nutritional intake, water quality and genetics.

Gars grow much quicker at higher temps than lower but only if available food and water conditions are also factored in. These fish can easily be stunted in growth even at higher temps by not supplying all the requisite conditions for optimal growth.

Some Fish in captivity do not grow as large or as quick as those in the wild. (Conversely some grow quicker and larger than their wild counterparts)

An aquarium is truly a poor mimic of nature and can not really provide for an animal in the same manner that a natural system can. One can attempt to do so and to a large extent get close but it is still lacking in several areas in even the best attempts. Fish (especially predatory) generally will not reach full potential in captivity.

I have personally seen no correlation between tank size and growth as long as other factors in growth (Temp, water quality, Feeding) are kept optimal.
