is there any way to increase and buffer the pH aside from using aragonite substrate?

basically the same thing. anything calcareous will buffer ph/raise it slightly. aragonite is much better'n CC too. of course there are additives that will bring it up, but you have to be extra careful with these fish if you wanna mess with those.
go with the black aragonite!

Get a filter bag and stuff some aragonite in it then drop that in your canister filter (if your using one) Being in the filter and having the water constantly flowing through it does a better job buffering than having the aragonite sitting in the bottom of the tank. Nice looking Gars to btw. One other thing, what kind of Pike do you have in there?

Probably not him then, those are more aggressive towards its own species than to other fish. But as we all know every fish has its own temperament.

could even be the knife.
he used to punk other fish at night when he was in my tank.
