Cuban has a mouth issue

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cool. I will up my changes. He's 4-5" with a 6" LNG in a 70gal with just a 3" bichir and feeders. This tank had my 3 FLG up to 12" each with no problems so again, I got complacent. But you're are right and thanks for the advice on a bigger change. I will use it.

The LNG has no symptoms as of now and is acting 100% normal and feeding freely even as I keep going back to check on the CBG

Unless ur tap contains very high amounts of ammonia its coming from your tank, which, means its not cycled, you should ONLY read nitrates. NO nitrites or ammonia.

Being setup for years means that it should be stable, perhaps your wc schedule needs adjusting.

Well again, I just did a 1/3 changed that zeroed out my levels. I'll continue to monitor more diligently.

You could also try feeding a tad less, when they grow their metabolism slows, thus they process less of the overall food consumed.

Nice fish tho!

Poor guy didn't make the night. Water is good today. That sucks. He sure went down hill fast! Eating great and acting normal in the morning and dead over night. I'm pretty bummed.

Cubans a hearty fish, and all the others add to the bio load, you could also try feeding a tad less, when they grow their metabolism slows, thus they process less of the overall food consumed.

Nice fish tho!

Compared to other gars, cubans are notably not a hearty/hardy fish...

That sucks.... sorry for ur loss man!

Thanks. Upon further review, I had a big pregnant sailfin Molly stuck in the canister intake line. Pressure seamed normal so I didn't even check. She was starting to rot so that explains my bio bloom. Rookie mistake! Man I am so mad at myself, not because of the $200 for the fish, but that I got lazy and didn't stay up with everything.

Well I hope at least someone reads this and learns from my dumb mistake.

Right wasn't comparing them to other fish tho.... Only the relevancy in his post.

Op: so sorry man, that's rough.

as Madding was alluding to, most of the info in the quoted post is incorrect. not sure how long you have kept Cubans for, but they are not hardy fish relative to other gar species or other species that the OP mentioned in his earlier posting. they are very sensitive to water instabilities, and ammotox will of course do them in. this is evidenced by that species faster decline relative to the other fishes in that tank.

EDIT: further, not sure what you meant by "relevancy of his post"...because other than comparison to other species your comment would be meaningless.

to the OP - sorry for your loss, and wish i had gotten to the post sooner. when CBGs go south it is often best to just get them to a different container and control water quality daily and with high aeration and pH-buffering substrate. hope you're able to take on the CBG again in the future--

Thanks. To be honest, I'm ashamed and Imbarassed that this even happened. I am fairly new at gar but have been keeping fish for nearly 20years. My FLG have me a false sense if ease with these fish. Although I'm a little devastated with this loss, I have kept and bred many more water quality prone fish over the years. I will try to obtain another and be diligent in their keeping.

"Vet" must be a younger fellow. I only say this because he jumps to a lot of c
