Cuban/Tropical Gar care specifics.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My own experience with datnoids has been hit and miss. One of my cubans killed a larger indo that I had. I've had floridas kill silver dats. Yet I had a ngt in the past with floridas without any issues. You will have to watch at feeding time to ensure the dats aren't spooking the gars. Overall a combination I personally would not recomend.

korean perch was fine ime, ditch the chinese they tend to get too voracious (same for nile and mundi as well, in case you were wondering).

I was wondering thank you.... what about a curupira wolf fish? I know they are the most commonly comm'd wolf and from what I've seen do well with polypterus.

Thanks man, do you have anything to say regarding the original post as well?

I've never owned tropicals so I can't say anything there. As far as cubans if you keep your water stable you really shouldn't have to many issues. Just keep in mind that they are more aggressive than floridas as well and choose tankmates wisely, they are a pricy fish would hate to lose one to a bad tankmate choice.

Yeah the price is whats keeping me asking all these questions and what not. It will be my center piece fish so tankmates will be picked around it and based on the sticky information. If anyone knows where one would purchase a korean perch by the way please pm me. They arent easy to find.

having read the OP and skimmed most afterward i would say you are likely get the basics from the pinned topics (nice job, someone actually read the pinned topics) and the other comments here.

what i would add is that your questions on tankmates are generally unnecessary when they can be answered with one simple blanket statement (in this case) : no, don't try any of those combinations, they are ill-advised, will not or are highly likely to not work long-term, and can pose threats to the gar or other fishes. period.

more details:
Cubans are aggressive gars and the silver fish rule generally applies here (even if the silver fish has some bars or bands or whatever mottled pattern to it). some bichirs can work with gars better than others (similar size is best) and other gars often work best. knife fish are hit or miss. definitely not advised (or wise) to go with pbass, nile perch or any of the other non-true perches (and even true perch are not advised). gars are best kept with other gars of similar size, a few bichirs work, and SAL/AUL can work. if the CBG is your centerpiece, do what you can to keep all the fishes happy in that environment. good luck--
--SRD

PS-- CBGs are sensitive to pH fluctuations and water quality moreso than other gar species, you will have that to keep you busy instead of dealing with poor tankmate choices--

Thanks Solomon I was hoping you'd chime in on this. Now seeing that gars work with other gars best from what all of you have said, what if I used the money I made to get the PBB and instead I got the Cuban AND the Tropical Gar to go along with the Ornate Bichir and the Endlicheri I already have and just make it those 4 for now and if another nice gar comes up somewhere along the line add it in... (not a gator gar). Could an 8-10 inch Tropical gar go in with a 6-7 inch Cuban?

Also I'm trying to get a gauge here on something; is the difference in aggressiveness between Cuban Gars and Florida gars more like the difference between a Jardini and a silver arowana or more like an African Lungfish and a South American Lungfish?
