  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it does pay to not let them breed until the male is 8" and female 6" to help them grow, the 4" pair we had bred and i think it took them about 6 months to grow about half an inch, no exageration.

i dont know how long shane (bolty) had the pair for after me but i dont think they grew much with him either!

I'm not sure if too many people bring these guys in. From what I know, not many are collected. The fish I obtained were some generations removed, and they did grow really slow. It took them about 7 months to grow from 3" to 5".

This year, I picked up some 2-2.5" grow outs in March. Right now they are 3.5-4". 2" in 7 months (again).

I wonder if introducing some wild blood may improve "over all growth", as it does in some some fish.

The best thing about this fish is, even with the slow growth, they show amazing color patterns at around 3.5". They are fun to keep because of their "big fish" attitude even at this size.

I have found there are always a few from each spawn that (whether male or female) grow like weeds, while the majority grow at a normal or slow rate until the alpha types are removed, there are then a few that seem to take up the slack and have growth spurts.
Also if I do more than two 50% water changes per week, no matter the feeding regime, growth increases exponentially.
But I've found that to be true for all cichlids.

Back in 1999, i had two 2' males. one killed the other and i ended up selling the other. I kept only for two- three months. I do agree with above info. slow growing, strickingly beautiful, and very aggresive! Go for them, and enjoy!
