my lap has developed these huge cupped fins like a scoop.I have noticed a good deal of head shaking,twitching and other funny actions between the laps.They are around 15 inches.Has anyone else owned a poly with these huge cupped fins?

I forget which one is which....but I believe it's a way to sex them. The cupped fin means female...I think?
the males do this, not the females... they use the cup to catch and fertilize the eggs...
but is he like this for long periods of time?

He has been doing this for the past few weeks and one of the females is super fat and she has been"flirting" with him.

Yes, the cupping of the anal fin is most definately a MALE trait! It's the same basic thing as an erection! Your boy is letting his tankmates know he is sexually ready and he's displaying to see if there's any interest! Your fat female sounds as if she could be swollen with eggs and appears to be responding with the first steps of the mating dance! Keep a close watch on their activities and you may be blessed with a scattering of eggs! Additionally keep a eye on whether your boy always cups to the same side ( a lefty or a righty). Just something I've been studying for some time! Good luck, and keep us updated!
