Tonight i was watching my two endis and i noticed the smaller of the two doing somthing odd. It would swim around the bottom with its anal fin jutted out to the side, fully extended and in a catchers mit cupped shape. The two of them are about 13" and 11" and like i said it was the smaller one doing it. Has any one seen this? Any ideas what its doing?

they use that fin during mating. when the females
release the eggs, the male catches them
in the cup, fertalizing them and dropping them.
i have seen my albino sen, polli, and delhezi do this frequentely.

Yup, i have a tank full of bichirs who are turning into "big fish" now. They frequently cup their anal fins in a pulsating motion.
I've even see one of my endis try to initiate mating behavior, i tihnk he was just practicing becuase they are too young to be sexually mature, but i've seen him swim beside a lapradei and brush his anal fin against his. Yes he tried it on another male bichir haha

I'd ask for pics but I think it's inappropriate. I've noticed similar behavior in my tank but I figured it was just like, advanced navigation technique, like diverting water. Glad I know what it is now, he's just going through "that stage".
