curb firemouth aggression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a Firemouth when I first started this hobby. The Firemouth was a aggressive little bastard, always flaring and fronting my other fishes, but when it came down to actually fighting, the Firemouth did not want any part of it.

well he stopped flaring at everyone after my devils settled in a little he went and flared at my big one and got lip locked and shaken all over the place.. after that he has been much more docile.. he just needed to be put in his place i guess.. now everyone seems to be chasing everyone but no damage being done as of right now.. im watching them very closely tho as i really dont want my sevs getting hurt and if it seems like they are i will move them to the 55 i got sitting in storage now.. but so far everyone has been surviving just fine without even fins being messed up

Even after moving my tank around, neither of my Firemouths ever curbed their aggression. It was unfortunate that they didn't because the bigger of the two got massacred by my 11" oscar and the other had a run in with a blue Acara that was twice his size.

I think the Sevs would be OK with the Oscar, but if the FM continues to chase and harass the Sevs to the point that they are hiding or are eating less than normal I'd get them out ASAP. They are usually in a different aggression class than the RD or FM. I know FM's are not supposed to be that aggressive in general, but they sure as heck can be.

well there is no damage being done at all he doesnt even fin nip.. the red devils are about 3.5" and the FM is like 3" and the sevs are 3 and 3.5 and the fm doesnt do any damage just gill flairing and lots of chasing going on.. i think i can wait it out i just wasnt sure if the stress of being chased all the time would bother my new sevs as i have never kept them.. i know the devils will be ok and end up prolly killing the fm if i dont keep everything in check i just dont want the sevs to have any problems they are probly my fav fish in the tank looks wise and the oscar has the best personality so far but the sevs are settling in and getting a bit of a personality too..

IME, the Firemouth is all talk and no action; my FM is constantly gill-flaring with my gymnos, which are 2/3 his size, but no one ever gets hurt . . . it's only a matter of time before one of the other fish gets tired of his c**p and gives him a beat down . . .

I've had about a 1/2 dozen FM's and have never had one terrorize a tank.
They do a lot of bluffing and flarring but always retreat when approached.

I would say that you need to do nothing.

My current FM is at the bottom of the pecking order as all mine were.

yeah thats what ended up happening. now everyone seems to bluff each other.. my sevs even stand up to the RD's now.. only serious scare i had so far was my biggest rd vs my oscar.. they are about the same size (4") and the oscar held his mouth wide open then charged the willing to fight RD but there wasnt any damage done. im still watching the tank closely but it seems like everyone is fine for now
