Curious about a Festae

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mayan are called Red Terror too, or "False" Red Terror. Some pet stores don't know any better and others do it on purpose because they look so similar especially when young. Countless people have fell for it and bought "Red Terrors" only to find out later that they were not Festae.

If you want true Festae get them from a MFK vendor. It's highly unlikely that you will find one in a common LFS.

sounds about right, I was shocked to see a "red terror" at the store, but I have been lucky in the past to find a Cuban at that same store.Oh well, I will be looking around for a Festae eventually.

I keep my female with a Freddy, jack dempsey, a Midas and a female con in a 300 with a bunch of loricariids. No real aggression whatsoever except with the con. They seemed to have reached a truce, but I still referee once in awhile. She is enamored with our Midas "Brock". Very personable and always out front.

I agree with the picture. No festae and a rather strange looking Mayan if it actually is one.

Is it possible that it might be a hybrid?Ok, that gives me a good idea for a tank size, where did you purchase your tank and what are the measurements?

funny, I was going to suggest a possible hybrid, but it was pretty late and my eyes went working the best. I got my tank from Midwest Customs and its a 96x24x30. its a 300 tall which works just fine, but the tank sits in our downstairs hallway so we had to go with a slightly smaller footprint. If you have the room, a 96x30x24 is a slightly better option because of the increased footprint size.

I have a family room that was just addition to the house, so everything is concrete underneath thankfully. I don't need height to be honest, but I may look into building a plywood tank.

Height is nice for viewing and increased water volume, but it really has little function for large cihlids. Footprint is the key

I agree, I have seen a 260 gallon tank that had no height, but the length and width was huge. The LFS by me has 3 midas,2 Oscars,4 JDs,Frontosa,Jaguar,Channel Catfish, and a few other cichlids. They seem to have plenty of room, because the Midas or Jaguar doesn't bother anyone.

There is a ton on these fish here and else where but I respect the honesty of your question and I will add a few things I have learned through my time with them.

They share all the typical traits of other chiclids, smart, personality variations, diggers and bangers etc. Some differences are they grow big but slowly- the exact opposite of oscars for example. Some of my males have taken 5 years to reach a full 18 inches so many of the fish depicted on web sites are juveniles. In general i would say they are more assertive than overtly aggressive. These fish seem to require a larger territory than most other chiclids if they dont have space they get side ways. They can be kept with other fish big enough not be eaten. Festae do exhibit con-specific aggression however. The females are the lookers and by far more aggressive than males. If you really want to keep this fish through adulthood in my opinion minimal tank size is 220 gallons ( 6X2). If you have a pair of breeding age the other fish no matter the size are in peril.

hope this helps
