Much to my dismay yesterday I noticed my 6 inch delhezi has developed a curved spine; I know it is common in some cb polys. It's in the front 1/3 of his body, right where his first couple spines are. I've noticed a hunch-backed appearance for a while but he was always sitting in the plants so I assumed it was just the position he was in. It also appears that he can't straighten out completely; he is slightly C shaped starting at the hunch. He cruises along the bottom just fine but has difficulty staying upright in open water. He's eating fine and I've never seen any sign of trauma; none of the other polys bother him. He still has his external gills, I wonder if they have remained because it's easier than swimming up for air. I'm just looking for opinions on what I should do; is this going to shorten his life or impact his quality of life? Anything I can do to help it? (75g with 1-2 40% wc/wk, ammonia and nitrite 0, nitrate <20, low 80's temp) Sorry for the potato pics; had to blind him with the flash last night. 20131003_220932.jpg20131003_220953.jpg20131003_221049.jpg

Oh yeah. I could def see his hunched back. Im not sure about how it may affect him but he still looks unique to me. Quasimodo would be a really good name for this guy ;) Take good care of him and give him the best life he could possibly have!

Sad to say but your del may not make it that long, my albino send lasted for more than a month and is now in bichir heaven. Goodluck though!

Are you sure it is a curved spine? Not a lump-wound like on the back?? My Ornate suffered from the latter, lumped wound, he got better again after some 10 a day WC. I think maybe the del of yours got bump upward while trying to jump. Observe first for sometime, I hope it got all better again for him.

The hunch backed look had been there for at least a month; I noticed it but never thought much about it. The twist is harder to see in the pics but his body makes a curve if you're looking at him from above. It reminds me of scoliosis in humans, it's definitely a spinal issue. I sure hope he lives. I don't mind how he looks as long as it doesn't interfere with his health.

Oh dear, its definitely the spine. Before the pictures had to load i was hoping it could be just a parasitic or worm issue, the pictures cleary show the curve from back to belly :(

It could be due to it being cb or it could be an injury from swimming into the glass. There's no real way to know. If it starts getting worse, then it may affect it's quality of life. Then again, if it already has trouble swimming upwards, then I would say it's already being affected.

The 1st that caught my eye was the external gills still there at 6in,not only are they still there they look to be big at this stage in his life they should have been absorbed,If he is eating regularly I would say he will be fine for some time. As of quality of life he is already being impacted by not being able to swim properly witch in turn causes stress.

I thought it wasn't unheard of for them to stay that long? I knew they might stay longer if water quality was poor but mine certainly isn't. I just feel like I need more obvious signs of distress before I could do something like euthanize him :( This sucks man.

It truly dose suck,,i would not euthanize unless it seems like there is no hope but that is me. We have received some polys that have extreme malnutrition issues to the point of looking like a cork screw. Months of healthy foods and clean water and they are back to normal.
