I need a tightly fitting lid for my leech tank so it doesn’t escape, could I cut an acrylic sheet into the semi circle shape that I need for the lid and then drill a notch for the filter cord and air holes in the middle? To cycle the tank I’m using a submersible filter but I need to buy filter that has a really low flow and a sponge to cover the intake, anyone know of a filter like that?

Your lid design will work. You could also use multicell polycarbonate from Homedepot. I would use an sponge filter instead of an HOB.

They have a bunch of small, super low flow aquariums at Petsmart called Bettaflo. They come with lids and filter and are cheap. May cost the same buying different parts to DIY.

They also sell a low flow filter, Topfin BF5 (bettaflo 5)

How does a sponge filter work? I know nothing about them. I think a sponge filter would be better caus it’s smaller but I also need one that has a long plug in cord because of the raised location of the tank.

Air driven so no moving parts to mulch your leeches!

If you want to prevent escapes, don't notch your lid. Rather drill a hole at least 100mm away from the lid edge for tubes, cords and feeding. Hole doesn't need to be small or a tight fit.
