Flow will help...but in the end cyano is, and always will be a water quality issue.

also when bulbs get old some how that causes cyano. im not sure how but my fan burnt out and i think that may of affected my bulb. thats why i got a new bulb. i already re-placed the fan.

so far without the bulbs or the knanos the cyano is about gone. looking alot better already:)

good to hear.

sump/ refuge up and running. water is much clearer expect when fish stir up the sand. sump ended up holding 15gals. i did a 1" mixed sandbed mostly sand some crushed coral but not much.

the mag 5 pump was to much water volume for the overflow to handle so i dialed it down some. id say its running at 80%. with the power off the sump had no problem holding all the water about 1 1/2" from the top.

i will be adding rufuge critters and a mix of macro algea tommarow. ill post some pictures.

the strange thing is since i added the sump with 15gal of new water my protien skimmer isnt pulling any skimmate. whats up with that?

When you disturb your system, sometimes the skimmer will act up for a bit.

Think of it this way, the residue from manufacturing on the inside of your skimmer causes a "break-in" period. The residues from the inside of your sump are probably doing the same thing. When you clean skimmers they usually take awhile to start up again.

Some skimmers are so sensitive that the addition of food or even reaching into your tank will stop the skimming momentarily.

Im willing to be that by the time you have read this your skimmer is producing little bubbles again. :D

it actually not making bubbles. it really never did. its been 3 or 4 days since i set up the sump. still no skimmate.

also i added a phosphate reactor to the return section. it fit perfect. i still have room in the front left it i ever want to get rid of my hob aqua c skimmer and replace it with a small in sump style like tunze 9002.

So you have an AquaC...how long have you had it? Did you wash it out? What is your bioload like?

i have had it over a month. i did wash it out when i got it. i clean the collection cup every few days. when i got it it was making good skimmate. i just clean the unit out a few days ago, no skimmate since i cleaned it.

i would have to say i have a large bio load for a 28 gal tank. i have 7 medium sized corals. 40lbs of live rock, 1" of sand, 1-cleaner shrimp,1 peppermint shrimp, 2-clowns,
1-algae blenny,1-court jester goby,1-three striped damsel, 1-6line wrasse and a bunch of snails and crabs. i feed twice a day.

i need to check my nitates. but phosphate at 0, because of the phos reactor.
nitrates were staying around 10 after i removed the the old fuge and macro algae. higher then id like.

Maybe your fuge is just kicking too much butt?

Email AquaC...they have great support. Have sent me parts for free before without even showing proof of purchase. Great company to deal with. Im just stumped as to what could be going on with your system.

Hmm...must have just been the cleaning. Mine had two break-ins...the initial, and the one that I had a couple months ago...where now I get an even darker skimmate that compiles over a longer period of time.
