Custom Rock Wall for 180 Gallon...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well so far we've filled it, added chemicals & some biomedia from my 55... it's been cycling for a few hours now but we've ran across a major FOAM problem that's building in the filter... I'm not sure whats up w/ this...

(Having issues w/ the Silicone II leaking into the water, even after cure - had to pull apart the entire wall & re-piece together w/ actual Aquarium Silicone... was getting a bad foam/cloudyness to the water along w/ high ammonia readings from the Silicone II as stated that during cure, ammonia will leak... we discovered the Silicone II hadn't fully cured in some areas...)

Will update progress in a few days when we get it back together & read water ammonia 'n' such then...

Great looking build, I hope it all comes together soon and works out. Excited to see with water and fish. Normally you would wait 48hr for the silicon to fully cure before getting it wet.
I have been thinking bout building one but am worried all never get my tank together since I just picked up a used 135 and rebuilding and that seem like its taking me long enough.
Good luck.

This is the problem with building your own background. You have to be really careful about what you use. GE II silicone is nasty stuff, and great stuff also leaches. You need to get the great stuff pond and stone foam, it's designed to be used in ponds and is fish safe.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments!

We're currently rebuilding it w/ aquarium silicone...

As far as the Great Stuff we used for the "cave" areas... that's pretty set in stone at this point, as it's been fully cured around the PVC and completely painted over... We hadn't heard of the pond stuff nor could I find it, but I will look again. I'm not sure how to fix this or if it would still be an issue after this long of curing. Only other option is rebuilding these areas & it would destroy the look of the wall pretty badly...

I have used Aquarium Silicone over the "Great Stuff" in some of the cave areas... hopefully this will help seal it better after it dries & cures on it...

We recently let it dry again for another 2 days... we glued it in the tank again last night around this time & have had a fan blowing on it... hope to put water in later tomorrow night after 48 hrs of full cure of the silicone...
