custom tank full glass questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
starfire is completly different from normal glass basically a differernt silicate is used its just as strong as normal glass

as said already :o

everything is the same other than the visibility of colours. you could drop acid and smell your fishes colours though..

I am a mechanical engineering student and we learned about this in calc. 2 this past semester. The thickness will depend on how tall the tank is. The force on the glass increases as the water level gets deeper. You can figure the force on a panel of glass by doing a simple intergral. If you let me know the wide and depth of a panel of glass, I can calculate the force applied from the water.

130 x 49 1/2 x 36 1/2

3/4 " thickness

it should be legit. ive seen tons of tanks at 36 1/2" with thinner glass but thanks that would be cool to know.

im now considering buying a 650-700gal that I can have prebuilt.

it would cost a bit more and hold a bit less but its a hell of a lot more convient. still not sure. :(

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, but I been busy finishing up with finals. Using the constant 62.5 lb/ft cubed for the density of water, I calculated the following forces. On the 130 inch by 36.5 inch panel of glass there would be 3,132.098 pounds of force at the bottom and on the 49.5 inch by 36.5 inch panel there would be 1,192.607 pounds of force at the bottom. Hope that helps.

i just got a lease on a 3 bd rm appartment going to custom build 2 x 240 gal tanks

and im going to get a trailer and bob cat to live in partially and im going to start on a house with my uncle which ill either sell or use --- eta = 3 years

tank may or may not be posponed - glass will be bought and i think im going to do a non-perm brick foundation for the tank --- thinking of getting GOOD concrete bricks and stacking them in a structually sound way so i can take it apart if i ever have to and resemble it.

is it difficult to take a tank apart, just dremeling away the silicone then cleaning it off with a bladE? im thinking of setting up a monster tank in this basement for the 3 year eta.

would a brick foundation hold? i dont want to do any cement between bricks just lay them out / interweave ----- assuming 8.34 lb to a gal the foundation will need to hold up to 185 lb / sq foot assuming the tank is 45 sq ft.

Sounds like you will be busy! I do not know much about stands right now. I'd say that since all the weight would be bearing down in the block, which would then be directed to the floor, you might be ok not putting mortar between the block. I have seen others just use blocks, but you might want to get a second or third opinion from someone with more experience in that area.
