To all Fish store owners: Why is it that everythime I go to fish stores (and I go to a lot) When i pick out a fish, the person at the store always gives me a hard time about what I am buying. For example: I just bought a copper banded butterfly fish. The guy acted like he didn't want to sell me the fish? Like I was not worthy of it. He tried to talk me out of the fish saying he is a picky eater and they are SO hard to keep and so on. I am glad that he cares about not killing the fish, but fish stores need to know more about what they sell so they can educate the buyer of the fish. I mean, that is why we are all on MFK? right. I have done my homework on the butterfly fish? I know what he eats. i know the garlic trick. Instead of him asking me if i knew how to care for it, he immediatly right a way was trying the not sell me the fish. The answer is education for both parties. Thanks for letting me vent.

venting is good for the glaven

haha usally its the reverse sure that oscar will do fine in your ten gallon cripes be glad you found a good fish store not many left i know one that wont sell if youre tanks not ebstablished but only because they have to gaurantee the fish ..

Most stores I know will sell you anything you point at.

I get the 10 million questions when I go to a particular fish store...I usually am more educated on the fish they are selling me that they are, and that shuts them up real quick....I start fireing questions and answers back at them, and they get really flustered when they don't know the answer, and I do....HA HA HA....

Jen ;)

At least your lfs has people that care about the fish.I see common plecos sold to people as algae eaters for 10g tanks all the time. And the @$$***e that tried to sell me 6 pacu for my oscar tank.consider yourself lucky sounds like a decent shop.

The store I work at doesn't gaurantee saltwater at all. But I at least make sure people know what they are getting into when they buy a Monsterfish. Fortunately I work in a wealthy part of town so usually they smile, knod, buy and do the crap they need to. . ie 180gallons etc lol

i do the same thing at the one pet store the owner hates me i cost him buissness alot

As a store owner if someone is in the store that i havent seen before and they say they want a fish i alway's ask them if they know the general care for the fish. If they do we talk about outher thing's (there tank, there plains, ect ect). If they don't know i give them the genual care of the fish ( what he eat's, how big he grow's, and recomended tank size and tank mates). I willingly spend countless hour's with custimers just talking about fish to make them more educated about the fish even if i don't make a sale im still happy knowing that that person is walking out of the store with more knolage then when they walked in.

as others stated, be glad that the guy cared enough. i do understand though about it going a little too far, but as a LFS employee, i know exactly where he's coming from. just give the guy a chance and blow it off as soon as you walk out next time. ;)
