Why do my cutesie fish die?

When I first started with fish keeping (a N00B persay) I couldnt keep fancy guppies alive, But that was just due to inexperiance.

A guppy (meant as a feeder) managed to make it into my sump, an has been living very happily in there without any help from me.

So Its not hard to keep "cutsie fish" alive.

My cute little puffer is a nasty little @#$%.
My one molly died, and a killie, but that is about it.

My male molly got eaten, so it wasn't my fault he died.

ive lost both kinds... just a matter of "thier time to go". hasnt been due to lack of maintance or water quality. in fact, my community tank is pretty much self suffincent on its own (no, i dont neglect it) the only problem i have had was a zebra dying from natural causes (only thing i can figure) and neon dying from NTD, a ghost shrimp (natural??), and a dwarf gourami from getting his butt kicked by the other one...

ive also had just natural death with monsters too... a pleco just up and died, a pictus did too (which sucked as he was a nice 14"er) and just recentle a dinosaur bichir which seems to have gotten HS :(

i voted #3, but maybe its really #4 huh?

Gee thanks everybody. Last time I 'make myself vulnerable' to you heartless SOB's.

In truth, I do take my fish very seriously, and I really think I am doing everything I can. I may have exaggerated some--I have had some small fish for a very long time--it just seems that I lose a disproportionate number of them for no apparent reason.

Anyway, thanks for the 'support.' Geez, with fronds like these, who needs anemones?

Howdy,

I think the key to successfully keeping smaller fish is tank stability. Old Schoolers would call it "aged water approach". Minimal maintenance has been the key for me. The more I messed with water changes and water chamistry, meds and filtration, the more died. I also found that plants are an essential part of successfully keeping small fish, especially tetras. Here's what worked best for me:
  • set up a planted tank
  • canister filter for good biofiltration
  • no additional powerheads or anything
  • monthly water changes (kill me) of 25%
  • filter cleaning intervals 6 months or more (currently 10-12 months on my 20 gal Macropodus/Garra tank)
It's for sure that smaller fish need different care than Monsters.

well, neither did i... but that is just a guess. it could have been 13". hard to tell when its moving so fast but it was definately bigger then the 12" ruler. of course, i didnt measure it when it died to be exact :screwy: it was bee-u-tee-ful though! its barbels where almost 10"

ill have to see if i can find pics... it was before the digi age

I know dude, I was just laying a guilt trip on everybody. I am just frustrated that my fish keep dying despite my best efforts. I may just need to stick to monsters.
