i'm getting acrylic glass cut for my 75 gal tank's hood, but how many inches should i leave open in the back to fit the tubes of filters and heaters through? i thought 1.5" would suffice, but i'm not positive. what are your thoughts?
Yes it's a type of plastic, so it's much easier to work with than glass.
If you buy a piece cut to the exact size you want then you could use a hand coping saw to cut out notches for wires and pipes. A coping saw looks like this and you should be able to get one at any hardware place for a few dollars. http://home.howstuffworks.com/coping-saw.htm
You can also use drills and files on it as long as you take care and dont get it too hot while cutting and drilling.
I suggest just cutting slots big enough for the pipes, less chance of a fish jumping out through the gaps.
it seems really difficult. and according to my mom, home depot will cut it for free so there is no need, but the thing is that i don't know how big the tube for my xp3 canister filter is going to be. i know absolutely nothing about canister filters other than that they are better to use for big tanks than HOB filters. also, does it have just one tube, or does it have 2?
i'm getting the acrylic and filter tomorrow though. can i get the filter first, bring it to home depot, and have them measure it and make a hole for it?
