cutting standard tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive done it with a 10 gallon before, it was actually very easy. I have been working with glass for years though, so It may take some practice if you aren't used to cutting glass.
BS! There is no way you are going to cut a tank that is siliconed together. You can tap it all you want. Make me a video, and I'll pay for the 10 gallon tank.

well i have tried it and i haven't cut it, i have cracked the glass by removing the top bracing.. i have scored the glass already and i haven't tried to snap the glass though. as of now i'm using a 5.5gal drilled to do what i was trying to do.. but when i have time i'll scrap out the 15gal i was planning to cut down and resilicon it...

I'd be happy to make a video. Ive got a pile of old 10 gallon tanks out behind my garage. Ive been working for a glass company for years and was a glass cutter for the first 10, so its quite easy now. You still have to cut the silicone at the seams before tapping the glass to make it run.

Also the longer you let the glass sit after scoring it, the harder it gets to break out. Use a little oil on the cutter for a smoother cut as well.

to use a little oil... what type of oil would i use on the blade? thought i could use water on glass and cutter then cut.. guess i have to pull the 15 back out of pill of glass tank and break those scored glass..

you can cut it why its in tack, is it as easy as single panels no.

you have to strip the silicone to the point you want to cut then mark the glass (hard part as ur marking in mid air..) then snap it.

no you can not do it if you dont want to cut the silicone to the point. for example tommy has a 10ft tank and he wants to cut it to 5ft he would have to remove 5ft of the silicone in order to snap the glass.

all in all from the look on my bosses face the few times he has done this its most likely easier/safer to just strip the tank cut it and rebuild.

Yep, this is exactly how i did it. Anyone with glass cutting experience should understand how it works.
