Cycling a tank in a week

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an extra filter cartridge in one of my established tanks the only thing is that the filter is different from the one on the 40g.(one's marineland and the other is a fluval).
doesn't really matter. You could simply take the used filter cart and cut it up into smaller pieces to fit inside the other filter

Since you have all these things, you're good to go. All you have to do is have the water at the right temp and when the piranha arrives just throw all the stuff in. Like the Duane said: pretty much instant cycle. You can also play it safe and dump in Stability.

So it's been a week and half and my readings are: ammonia 0, nitrite 0, and nitrate 10-20ppm. The piranha been in their for 4 days. I did have a high nitrite reading on the second day of my p being in their and it lasted for about 3 days but after water changes it lowered to .25 and then I added some prime to get it at 0 and it hasn't came up since. The piranha seems healthy and is eating pellets!

So, what did u end up doing in regards to cycling?

I put in a fish for a week and dosed it with stability. I also added in some gravel and decor from an already established tank. When the piranha came I had 0 ammonia but once I took the cycle fish out and piranha in the nitrite went up for a few days and then fell and now gone thanks to water changes and prime. Now just have around 10ppm of nitrate.
