Hello,

I am working on my friend's 13.09 gallon planted tank that have fish already on it. Anyway, it already have fish in it and in my opinion it's overstocked and asking for my help.

We got a predicament here because it's only 2 months old. The only reliable test kit that we have is pH test kit and a Nitrate test kit. Both from Sera.

We also have Sera Aquatan and Nitrivec.

Every other test kits are not available because the LFS here in our area thinks that it's good business if their customers fish keeps on dying for unknown reason (My guess is it's New Tank Syndrome).

Here's the list of the fish:
7 Cardinal Tetra
5 Black Neon Tetra
6 Bronze Corydoras
6 Otos
2 Female Pregnant Guppy (These are going to be donated to me! Yey!)

As you can see, it's overstocked for an 18x12x15 tank.

I asked him to put in Sera Nitrivec as directed in the bottle since, if it does say it contains those good bacteria, it could metabolize any ammonia present in the tank.

Another thing that may have kept his fish alive is that his water change schedule is a 30% water change on wednesday and saturday every week.

No plants haven't died or melted away yet.

Is there a visual or smelly cues that his tank is cycling or is cycled?

Using the test kit we already have, how can I make the best of it without ammonia and nitrite test kit?

Please don't post that I should get a test kit. I have tried to ask them, preordered and stuff but they won't listen! They keep saying that their supplier is out of stock!

Anyway, the tank also have 7 stalks of cabomba. They really grow fast!

I would say about 1-2 weeks after you get a nitrate reading... you dont want to just order a test kit online? i have a mardel test kit that tests ph, alkalinity, hardness, nitrite, and nitrate all in one strip. i love that stuff.

how did the female guppys get pregnant with no male ? lol

your tank will have already cycled but with that many fish your nitrate/ammonia will always be around .....you gotta flush some fish! lol jk...sell them :D

Blue_francis, I see you're from Baguio. Perhaps contact one of the PALHS affliates and have him send you API liquid test kit via LBC (if there is one in your place). Priority shipping (overnight) is 230 pesos.

Edit: I just saw the last part. Whom did you try to ask for the kits?

If you have any level of nitrate thats a good sign. It means that you are at the very least getting close to cycled if not done already. Having a planted tank will reduce the nitrate level as the plants are using it to grow. How long has this tank been setup? Plants help accelerate the cycle.

hmmmmm must have bought them recent then.........silly me

i read somewhere that female guppies can store sperm and can keep getting pregnant for a couple of months even without male contact.

They were "pre-hit" by male guppies in the same tank before they were bought

Hmm... I better check the tap water in case there are nitrates in it. Just ot make sure the nitrates are coming from the tank.

LFS owner. I don't wanna go back there since they sold me a EHIEM 75 watt heater that's stuck at 26 degrees. Won't go back nor go down. Told them that it's broken but explained to me that it's EHIEM. It shouldn't be broken.

Also got them an expired AP GH & KH test kit. It was expired according to a customer service rep when I gave them the lot number. It was expired 2 years ago.

Told me Bactopur would cure White Spot Disease. I emailed Sera and found out that I need is Costapur not Bactopur. (Later found out it was Velvet)

The only thing I got good from them is a Nitrate test kit.

I was asking them an ammonia test kit since last December and kept saying to me that their shipment will arrive next week but when that week arrives, hello no test kit.

Out of 7 LFS here in Baguio, only 2 sells test kits. Out of 2 LFS, only 1 sells decently (not expired)

Never really thought of ordering just an ammonia test kit to any PALHS affliates. Maybe on pay day.;)

Should he stick to his water change plan? Like every Wednesday at Saturday? Or that would just prolong the cycling?

I am going to get some of his fish. What fish on the list that would be best to be moved?
