ok i have 3 geo's an 2 sev's under 2''s all of them an i have been forced to do water changes like every 3-4 days or my water gets disgusting looking, i tried doing only 50% but the water never cleared up so i went back to doing like 75% an it looks alright but im sure its not cycled correclty. before these fish i had oscars i thot the dirty/ cloudy water was from them so i traded them in at my lfs an got these fish just find out it wasnt them an my water still gets nasty

Edit: where would you suggest looking for fish keeping articles that could help me out?

here and google... oh yes did i mention..get some test kits ;)

The only way to know whether yo are cycled or not it to test the water.

You can etheir buy a liquid drop test kit and check your self or call your local LFS and ask them if they will test your water. Most will free of charge. You need to test for ammonia , nitrite, and nitrate

  1. What type of water conditioner are you using at your water changes?
  2. What is your method for changing the water in detail?
  3. How long has the tank been set up with fish in it?
  4. Explain what you mean by nasty water? ---milky white cloudiness/ green tint/ lots of left over food on the bottom/ etc
  5. What is your feeding schedule?
  6. What do you feed?
  7. Does the tank have bright lights or does it get sun light thru a window?
I think with this info in detail we can sort the problem out. But with out the water parameters all is just a guess.

i use jack's water conditioner at water changes, i siphon the gravel then fill by up via hose kit with faucet adapter i feed once every other day an the last time my water was "nasty" it was milky coudy at first then went to a brownish then greenish. It never smelled tho. An i have a Standard bulb on the tank, this tank has been running since alittle after christmas i had 2 aquaclear 110's on it but after hearing about by pass i sold them an went to a rena xp3 which so far has been a mistake.

There is a tab for "Articles" in the top right corner of this page... although I did not see any that were geared toward new aquarium owners...

This link contains many articles covering many subjects... http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/

ok i tested my water an the results are as follows:
Nitrate- almost 0 less than 20 ppm
Nitrite-0
an i for got to buy the ammonia test dangit!

an thats 2 days after a 75% water change

hmm so 0 nitrite and between 0-20 nitrate after a 75% water change we cnat know for sure without an ammonia test but it would appear to be cycled to me

if its been going since christmas its cycled bacteria dont take that long to establish themselves usualy a month or 2

Well I will pick up the ammonia test kit tonight an
have the results posted up soon there after, but should you have to do
water changes every 3 days of atleast 75% in order
to get clear water??
