I heartily agree! LOL my opinions come from my own experiences -- sometimes they're positive experiences, sometimes they're negative. Cycling with fish was a negative one for me, and for the reasons I explained above, a potentially negative one for anyone. I think there are easier, safer ways to cycle, and that using those methods, as opposed ot cycling with fish, will make for an easier introduction into the hobby. Often, what seems easier/faster ends up taking longer/being more difficult in the long run, especially in fishkeeping.

:D you are prob right but i got my fish for x-mass as my wife was wanting fish in it yesterday lol so starter fish it is. I will let you know how it is getting them out lol

Yep -- have fun goin' fishin'! :D

When we started, in our 75, we also didn't QT. That was a hard lesson to learn. We lost three fish directly due to the ich, and one indirectly, as a result of moving the fish to a hospital tank.

When we upgraded to the 180, every fish that goes in is getting QT'd. It's been completely worth it -- we've already discovered one would have introduced ich.

When it comes down to it, as much as you read, as many stories as you hear, you're still going to try to do it different -- which works out sometimes! But, often, the reason you hear things so much and read so much about something is a good one!

It takes a while, but eventually, you start taking the long route, because you get sick of dealing with the results of the short one. ;)

LOL it could be informative for the OP, as well... at least we're not talking about gardening or something.

I put them in a tank and watch them. LOL and then I fix what ever comes up. I wait a month if nothing goes wrong, and longer if it does, and the fish needs to be treated.

ok so do you have a tank setup just for QT or do you set one up everytime you get new fish? do you run a drip from your tank to the QT tank?

The tank is a 75 that is just set up all of the time because we're currently stocking our 180. When we finish, it will get moved and probably set up as freshwater and I'll fill it up with fishies.

We don't run a drip -- the water is the same. Same pH, same KH, same specific gravity, etc., unless, of course, I'm treating for ich, and then it's not.

You can set up a QT every time you buy a new fish, but since we're on a mission to get the stocking done ASAP, and the QT process is so long, and you can really only QT one fish at a time, it's easier just to leave the thing set up.

yeah tell me about it!!! I just got a new hood :) for my tank and a clown and when i looked at the clown under the new hood that darn clown has ich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! F@#$

Wish I could have a QT setup!!!

You can use a Rubbermaid tub -- it doesn't have to be fancy. Filter it with a sponge filter that you keep running inside of your sump. When you get done using it, wash it in tapwater, let it dry, and return it to the sump. You can't see the fish as well in a Rubbermaid, but it's better than not having one.

OK DON'T USE FISH!!!I about ready to get out the TNT to get this darn fish out of my tank!!!

Justonemoretank is right it is a B@@ch to get them out! I will have to pull all my rock out!!!!!!
